Do You Really Need Male Teahers?

“My homeroom teacher is a man!” With a new year in a school, lots of primary school students expect who is classmate and homeroom teacher. If their homeroom teacher is a man, it is very unique case because according to an article of Jung-Ang Daily which published in October, 2008, female teachers are occupied about 90% in Korean elementary school. Because of this gender imbalance in primary school, the Seoul education tried to introduce the rule, quota for employing male teachers, which is that the schools have to select male teachers over 30%. People who insist this rule point out the problems that male students can build sexual identity by male teachers, the school need powerful guidance to lead students to right road, and the female teachers’ physical problem can be covered by male teachers. The quota for employing male teachers, however, is not necessary because of sexual identity, the role of guidance, and discrimination.

First of all, the sexual identity of students is not built in the school but in the home. Children can have the first experience of society in their family relationship. In this, they can learn the gender role by observing what father do and what mother do. It means that the behavior of father and mother give the first image of gender identity to the children not the teachers behavior. Also, what the more influence thing to students of sexual identity is a sex education not the male or female teacher. Therefore, to help students build their sexual identity, the school should concentrate on the right behavior of their parents and the right sex education not the rate of male teachers.

Moreover, powerful guidance of male teachers is not good for students. The guidance by using physical punishment can stop students’ aberration temporarily, but it cannot be the ultimate way to change behaviors of the students. For example, the Youth Right Center surveyed some high school students such as Pung-moon and Duk-sung high school about corporal punishment. This survey shows that most of students have resistance to physical punishment of authoritative teachers. The guidance in school has to start with communication between teachers and students, so prescriptive and coercive atmosphere of male teachers’ punishment is not a way to lead students in school life.

In addition, it is a discrimination that the school evaluate some problems caused by female teachers such as a lack of extracurricular programs’ physical ability and ability of contract teachers because of regular teachers’ menstrual, maternity leave. Employing male teachers more for various extracurricular programs like a track meet or retreat is the way of looking down all people who prepare teacher certification examination. This is because selecting male due to the fact that he has better physique than female even though female has great grade in the test is one of the sexual discriminations. Also, underestimate of contact teachers who are hired because of regular female teachers’ absence is one of the class discriminations and this is unfair.

The school is the place where teaching students for the better future of our society. Therefore the schools have to concentrate on not how to balance female and male teachers’ ratio but how to teach and guide students to right path. Also, hiring male teachers for helping boy students form sexual identity by male teachers, leading students by physical punishment, and separating female and male teachers by using physical differences and contact, regular teachers is not a necessary way for the students.

The Unforgettable 2002 World Cup

In 2002, the red waves rose all of the region in Korea. All the red waves were delighted with each movement of players for a goal. Korea was beaten by Lebanon in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match on November 15, 2011. Have the 2014 World Cup ahead, the 2002 World Cup which was co-hosted by the Korea and Japan come up to many people. Thanks to World Cup in 2002, Korean was evaluated as one of the most dynamic people and they could have opportunity to promote the nation “Korea” to all over the world. The 2002 World Cup, however, didn’t give Korea advantages because of economic, forgetting important problems, and relationship between Korea and Japan.

Above all, the World Cup didn’t help Korean economic development. Before holding the World Cup, Korea Development Institute predicted that Korea can create 12 trillion won and 350 thousand jobs. This turned out, however, it is just a matter of giant fantasy. The FEER, Far Eastern Economic Review, the economy magazine managed by Dow-Jones said that after the World Cup Korea had to get through the ‘World Cup Slump’ because the enormous investment for building stadium is far from long- term consumption and production.

Besides, so many social issues were forgotten because of the World Cup’s fever. Vladimir Tihonov who is Oslo National University’s Koreanology professor in Norway stated that the World Cup hid our social lives’ dark sides and just focus on the shown sides. This statement can explain the matter clearly in Korea. At that time Korea had problems such as matter of temporary employee and foreign worker but most of the Koreans concentrated on just the World Cup. Because of this, those problems couldn’t be solved and got even worse. Also, the World Cup caused the local election’s low turnout. It led to political indifference and some parties used it for their authority. According to research at National Election Commission from 20s to 30s elector’s turnout was just 26.3 percent in the vote during the 2002 World Cup.

In addition, many experts who study the relationship between Korea and Japan insisted that World Cup was the good chance of improving partnership with Japan because of co-hosting. The partnership, however, didn’t go well. Korea and Japan insisted single host at first but it was miscarried because of extreme competitions between two nations. This competition caused two countries to have more conflicts, as well. Also, Korea and Japan have problems such as territorial dispute of Dok-Do and distorting of history until now.

The 2002 World Cup is the event that most Koreans cannot forget forever because of an impressive achievement of Korean national team. Contrastively with this, the 2002 World Cup didn’t bring impressive result to Korean society. The Korean society had to experience World Cup Slump because of an earnest investment. Also, Korean didn’t consider the important issues such as the temporary, foreign worker problem and the local vote. The relationship between Korea and Japan which expected to be better didn’t develop to good way as well. Consequently, the 2002 World Cup isn’t benefit to the Korean society.

Are the Cell Phone and Society Friendly?

On April 3rd, 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper who is an inventor of cell phone called to Joel and said “Joel, I call you using real cellular phone. The cell phone!” After invention of cell phones, they have advanced as a medium of sending message, taking a picture and video, commercial dealing, and tracking the location beyond just calling tool. Even today, smart phones which can be used as portable computer are invented. With the innovative invention in the field of phone, the number of people who use cell phone and smart phone is rising. Cnet, an online IT company in America, reported that Portio Research in England released the report about the percentage of cell phone users is 50 at this time and it will be 80% in 2013 on October 29th, 2008. Nate’s online article on February 9th, 2010, referred that according to The Economist, a magazine of the England, more than four thousand-million cell phones are used in the globe. This alludes that we live in the world of cell phone. The cell, smart phones which seem to give lots of convenient ways of living modern culture, however, affect the society as a bad ways because of unhealthy, information gap, and classroom environment.

First of all, a harmful effect to physical health is one of the reasons. Using cell phone causes thumb arthritis because of too much amount of sending text messages with some applications like Kakao Talk and Tic Talk which produce infinite massage. According to National Statistical Office in Korea, 40% of people send more than 1000 text messages. If people use thumb repetitive and extravagance, this motion gives pain to finger muscles and tendons. So, it causes arthritis and damage of finger joint. Thumb has the simplest exercising radius so it has bigger side effect than any other fingers. Furthermore, Jong Yun Hwang, the author of “The assesment of spatial recognition memory on mice after prenatal exposure to mobile phone wave in utero” says that electromagnetic wave of mobile is absorbed in human body and it puts up temperature of body. So, human tissues get damaged. Also, prolonged exposure to electromagnetic wave adversely affect to organisms which have rapid cells growth such as lymph, marrow, and neuron. It causes the high incidence of leukemia, testicular cancer, breast cancer, electromagnetic hypersensitivity, etc. For example, the National Cancer Center’s professor Seung-Kuan Myeung reports in “Using cell phone and dangerousness of tumor” that people who use cell phone have higher incident of tumor than people who do not use and people who use mobile more than 10 years have a thirty percent greater risk of cancer.

The second drawback is having cell phone causes information gap due to the gap between the rich and poor. In the past, cell phone is one of the ostentation tools of people’s wealth. The price of cell phone was very high about 24 million in 1990s so, there were just a few people having mobile. As time goes by mobile’s price is getting lower and it causes almost people can have cell phone. These days, however, smartphone, the advanced type of cell phone having high price, is spreading to people. It provides many information which can get from the net and book, but its price and phone charges is too high to buy and use. So many people such as lower-income group can’t buy smartphone. With booming mobile’s various information services, the new group of data neglected class turns up. According to National Information Society Agency, information gap index is 61.9% in 2009 and it rise compare with last year the reason of prevalence smartphone. Sung ill Lee, Sung Kyun Kwan University’s System Management and Engineering professor, says owing to spreading of smartphone different type of information gap appears. For instance, Pukyoung National University’s Department of Mass Communication professor Sang Ki Lee says in his report named “Cell phone’s functions and risk” that people feel the biggest burden in using mobile at financial problem. Also, the research by Albamon, portal site for students’ part time job, shows 44% of respondent can’t but smartphone because of it is too expensive. So, people who can’t buy smartphone are not able to get useful information which smartphone users can obtain. It causes the big information gap between them and it promotes an atmosphere of social disharmony.

Furthermore, the classroom environment in school is going bad with dissemination of phones especially smart phones. According to an article which was published on November 24, 2011, the number of students who records course works and sleeps in the undergraduate class tends to be rising. Even though students don’t sleep, they search the Internet by using the smart phone. These situations affect badly to students who want to study and participate in class so, the problem is serious. The students are used to enjoy online game and search the Internet. What’s worse is that some of the students use smart phone for finding out an answer of the test in the mid-term, final exam. Because of this problem, Daegu Health College in Korea set up a locker only for smart phone in each lecture room. Before the lecture is start, most of the students put their phones in the locker and they concentrate on just the lecture without doing other things. This proves that the smart phone disturb students to study and muddy the lecture environment.

The IT is developing rapidly and lots of smart applications come out day by day. The first invention of cell phone brought people to make communication much easier than past time and this changed ways to contact each other. The next invention of smart phone brings people to approach huge amount of information and media. These innovative progresses give people convenient life, but it is obvious that this development give people harm effect such as physical problem, polarization in getting information, and bad influence in lecture environment.

A Modest Proposal

When we see people who avoid foreigner before they initiate a conversation, it is a very gloomy occasion. In Korea, English education is a compulsory education and Korean students learn English for 10 years at least. Although Korea tries to encourage studying English, people cannot speak in English and it seems very weird. So, for improving Koreans’ English skill and getting economic advantages, I suggest some ways very cautiously by using some strict law.

At first, the media in Korea have to be forced using only English. Such as news, documentary, drama, show, and even gag programs should be made using only English. To get information and pleasure, people have to have ability to do English well because they can understand what the media say with English ability. If some people make Korean subtitles and produce them, the government confines those people in the room which have nothing to communicate with the outdoor society for blocking the source of approaching Korean.

Furthermore, Korean government has to enact a law which people should speak in English in public area. If someone doesn’t follow this law, polices arrest and send the person to English countries as a slave. It is quite good solution because sending English countries such as America, Australia, and England earns foreign currency. Also, the person who is sent to Anglophone culture can acquire English naturally, so they can speak in English fluently in all public place in Korea after they come back.

If the same person does not follow twice after he or she come back to Korea, the law make their tongues cut. These tongues, surely, are used very useful ways. According to historical book, a stammering person ate tongue dish for his pronunciation. Likewise, the cut tongue will be sold to Korean who wants to speak English very well. Although it isn’t sold by Korean, don’t worry. People can export excellent material for food to Japan or China. Japanese does like cow tongue cuisine, so they try to find another tongue food for their tongue. Also there are very giant kinds of food and ingredient in China. It means that we can sell our tongue to China and it will be very good point us to earn foreign currency.

This law work really effectively. If people don’t follow this law, Korea can get economic benefit. Also, if people do follow this law, people who travel Korea feel comfortable to go sightseeing Korea. It leads Korea to have good image for tourist and this has advantage even interchange with other countries by offering good labor force and ingredient of food.

Why Is the Satire Society Gag Fun?

Do you want to know a way becomes a politician? The way is not difficult. Study a little when you are middle, high school students and enter the Seoul National University! Next step is being an officer of the court by studying a few years. If you become a judge, try to be familiar with the leading members of the government and then getting a nominee in the election of members for National Assembly and bring just two-hundred-million-won to National Election Commission. What do you think this? Isn’t it too easy?

This is one of the most popular gag programs in Korea because of two reasons. The first reason is that one politician accused main character in this program of libel and the other one is that popularity of a satire on society gag is rising day by day. Why dose kind of gag get concentration these days and also make people laugh? The answer is that common experience, logical error, and exaggeration.

Above all, the object to be criticized is made a caricature by using exaggeration. Lots of people are afraid to blame someone who does wrong behavior because someone is high class and wealthy. The satire society gag is very attentive to people’s want. The reflection with exaggeration leads certain person or situation which people want to blame to a cartoon world. In the cartoon world certain person and situation isn’t existence in reality any more. They are just riddling objects which are right to be pilloried. This act makes people laugh loudly.

The second reason is that most satire society gags are based on real reality. There are lots of social irregularities because of misunderstanding and wrong perspective such as racial stereotype. Almost people in modern society share the same social irregularities and they sometimes argue about wrong path of these problems. The universal ideas can affect people greatly compared to minor thoughts as like you can sympathize the feeling of stubbing toe against the step. The bigger sympathy people have, the greater effect gag affect to people laugh by giving both smile and serious thought.

Furthermore, this kind of gag is funny because of the irrational way of making logic. For example, if one person looks a man strangely and calls the police with serious facial expression because he is wearing all red stuff, what is the reaction of the most of people who watch that situation in front of television? Laughing. This is because the common sense that it is not true that people who like red are all the Reds is acceptable to everyone. The satire society gag points out exact point of people’s logical thought way and asks back: is it really right? Some situations which don’t make sense and no have logic, reason can be the best source to make fun of society’s fallacy.

Gag is the most powerful method to express the realities of the society situation by using laugh code. It can be protected under the name of “gag”. This greatly leads people to think about recent society where they live and think more deeply after laughing because of reflection of reality, not making sense, and being caricatured. The feeling of ESOSL rings in people’s hurt and it can grow its influence by using unique characteristic: laughing.

People ought to embrace other’s treats which are different from us.

Can you imagine the 1990s? Back then, the Korea had a more conservative concept than now. When ‘Seu Tae Ji and boys’ who were one of the best popular boy-group-singer in Korea debuted in 1992, most Koreans thought they were crazy and rude because of their unique fashion and different music style. Nowadays, however, although people who have diverse styles are shown on television, the public don’t treat they have some problems anymore. Since information technology and ways of interacting with other people have developed, many subcultures started to appear. The subculture is an opposite culture of the total, main culture and the most representative example is the youth culture. With appearance of various cultures continuously, people have to absorb those things because of expressing, estimation, and being accurate.

First of all, human being should respect individual rights of all the people. Every person has the same right to be respected. In addition, respect for man’s life and dignity is an essential law in democracy. Man’s right to respect means not only natural rights but also all people’s different styles and preferences. The politics textbook in high school published at Dae-Han Textbooksays the right to pursue one’s happiness, one of natural rights of respect for man’s life and dignity, can protect individuality.

The other reason is that evaluation about own culture from others. The modern life is a multi-cultural society and diverse thoughts are coming out with globalization. In low fertility and graying society, the inflow of foreigners will increase and it means that our country will become a more multi-cultural society. If we don’t understand those cultures, our country is evaluated as a selfish nation and it can be a great harm to interact with other countries. Sungkyul University Multiculture and Peace Institute’s manager Sim Hea-young professor says the attitude of looking down on other cultures leads to ethnocentrism and it can cause retrogression from the world’s main flow. Third, accepting various cultures can lead to creating new, improving culture. All cultures have a cycle: creation, growth, extinction. To grow our culture, we have to adopt other culture’s merit and exploit our own culture. Kim Bum-Soo who is Pyeongtaek University’s Culture Interchanging professor, says meeting new cultures can even make something out of nothing such as coexistence and symbiosis of Asia.

Lastly, we are more likely to be accurate when we are open. Since stereotypes are a form of prejudice, it also means that the paradigm itself carries biased information. Obviously, such data lacks precision and credibility. For instance, according to Choson Daily, the “D” corporation was one of the topnotch firms with no doubt among South Koreans in 1997. Many people believed and assured the stability of the company within at least 25 years, and they started to buy a tremendous amount of stock. The strong belief that the company would never go bankrupt under any crisis and the positive prospects of the economy, however, left people with empty hands due to the IMF crisis. The major mistake was that the people were not open-minded towards any possible risks or other critical information; all they considered was the blind faith based on others’ biased opinion. We can see here that such form of information can result in serious consequences. This means that the more we are aware and open to, the more we are likely to obtain objectivity. Therefore, the benefits we gain from opening are that as we try not to stick on one point of view, we gradually acquire reliability and validity which also means that we get chances to judge correctly about new people we meet.

Taking other cultures makes us be a person who has basic human right. Also, people who accept others’ thought and features without repulsion can get good image and estimation from both inside and outside. Furthermore, it is easier to be accurate to evaluate own culture and problems which people tend to ignore and justify. Thus, when we encounter people who have different point and style, we try to understand them and embrace a new culture.

Being Multicultural in Korea Has Three Negative Aspects.

The Korea Immigration Office reports that the number of foreigners who reside in Korea is about 11.5 million in 2010 and it will be grown every year. According to Cho sun daily newspaper’s January first, 2010 article, 20 percent of Korean general population will comprise of inter-racial marriage families. This alludes that Korea is multi-cultural society. It sounds like the Korea follows a good path of globalization with global village. But, there are three disadvantage sides of being multicultural society such as fail of establishing identity, lower nation image, and medical insurance.

The first weakness is that identity crisis of second generations. Chung-Ang University’s psychology professor, Park Jun-sung, states that 50 percent of interracial marriage’s juniors think they are foreigner in his work, Elementary School Adjustment in Korea of Children from Multi-culture. Also, 40 percent of second generation of interracial marriage replies that they are both Korean and foreigner even though their surrounding groups think they are foreigner. The others’ perspective affect greatly to their lives until around the adult, as well. For example, if children’s mother or father doesn’t speak Korean well so they cannot teach Korean to their children, their children’s ability of Korean delays and the time when the kids enter the elementary school is also pushed back. The worse thing is that the rate of dropout students in middle, high school is more sextuple than students who have Korean parents. According to research in government offices conducted by the National Assembly, 69.6 percent high school aged adolescents don’t attend school because of their differences from other students and identity crisis.

The other problem is that Korean national image can fall down because of violent and gross people who look down people from other culture. The paper, International Marriage Migrant Women’s Real Damage and Solution, produces lots of examples. In 2007 bride from Vietnam named Huanmami was broken her 18 ribs and dead because of her husband’s assault. Also in March 2008 Chinese bride death leaped to avoid her husband’s beating. Not only these two occurrences but also so many harm illustrations exist. In addition Korean Law of International Marriage has weak points. One point is that there is no duty to inform to international marriage people about their spouses’ history of violent crime, drug addiction, alcoholic, and financial problem. Also, if migrant people want to get visa, there are so many complicated processes. Like this, laws for migrant women’s position, right as a human and stable sojourn don’t exist. For reasons of these violent exemplify, community of nations think that Korea doesn’t have any consideration so they don’t want to interact with Korea.

Third weakness is that problem of medical insurance. Kim Hae-sung who is the representative of Policy Research of Multicultural Family Forum says that about 65 percent foreigner don’t have health insurance. Also, multicultural family’s low join rate of health insurance is big problem because the rate of unfaithful pay rises. So, although many foreigners live in Korea with their Korean family, they can’t receive proper pay. In addition they are in the blind spot of medical treatment so they can’t get treatment when they have to go to hospital.

Be global, be familiar, and show how good multicultural society Korea has! The problem is not way of showing Korean international culture and society. The matter is that just absorbing which the world says goodness without serious thought about being a multicultural society.  First of all, this is the most important thing is that Korean society should find out some negative conditions such as the identity, image, and medical problem. After concern about all possible things and prepare comprehensive countermeasure, Korea can show how great multicultural society Korea have.

The Three Reasons of Korean Wave in Japan

The first stream was led by Yon-sama and Jiwoo-heme. On the back of them, TVXQ and Boa became the second stream. And now, the third stream is arrived by Girls-generation and KARA. The appearance and prevalence of the Korean pop culture in Japan is one of the hot issues. It is so-called the Korean Wave. The public cultural Korean Wave affects to various countries, but situation in Japan receives the best attention and success. Even lots of entertainers treat entering Japan is the first step of being a leader of Korean Wave. These circumstances which Korean wave is prevail in Japan greatly are because of the similar culture treats, unique style, and triumph of history.

First of all, alike cultural atmosphere and looks of Korean and Japanese are the reason. The Korean and Japanese are all the East Asian, so their looking is familiar with each other. Also, The lineal distance between the City Hall of Seoul and Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office Building is only about 838km. Because of this short distance, Japan and Korea have had lots of interchanges and kept deep relationship. For example, during Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Kang-Hang, a classical scholar in the Joseon, disseminated the doctrines of Chu-tzu. After this, Japanese began to serve the Japanese emperor even though it was Japan’s feudal government. Also, Japan spread suit and hair in Korea during Japanese imperialism. So, people in Korea start to hair cut shortly matched with the suit. These lots of sharing make Korea and Japan develop similar cultural style, so Korean pop culture don’t cause sense of difference to Japan. These similarities make Korean culture be popular.

Another reason is a difference. Even though Korea and Japan have shared lots of ideas and style, they are still different country, so they have their own pop culture style. The most famous Japanese pop culture is animations and cartoons. Many Japanese youth like costume play which dress up as a cartoon character and they get familiar with story plot of animations. This tendency affects to other culture industry such as drama and group-singers. Japanese dramas and singers tend to follow the plot of animations. They include kinds of fantasy, cute scene, and make up looked like certain character which can be found in cartoon story. Also, the fan of group singers is almost men. On the other hand, Korean pop culture tends to be Western. It means that Korean public culture, especially group singers, tends to be sexy, chic, and strong-minded. This sort of image is not common in Japan, so it can have unique advantage compared to Japanese culture. Also, this appeal to Japanese women and it can be more spread to Japanese culture industry.

The last one is emotional power of historical relationship between Korea and Japan. It is well known that Japan conquered Korea for long years. During Japanese colonial era, Korean lost many not only cultural heritages but also cultural spirits. The life of suppression was deeply remained still in Korean. The idea of repression from Japan seems to lead to try to enter Japanese culture using Korean own pop culture. This is another version of conquering and colonial. Through diffusing Korean culture in Japan powerfully, Korean looks like to feel triumph. The past colonial era is compensated by recent cultural permeate without gun and knife. The historical uneasy relationship with Japan becomes a catalyst for Korean to concentrate on Korean wave in Japan. This focus leads people put every effort to advance in Japan and be succeed. Because of this effort, Korean pop culture can be more spread in Japan than any other country.

The globalization makes people all around the world can share own culture. The culture which was considered as endemic thing in the past now becomes a most powerful weapon to percolate to other country. Many countries try to make unique symbolic of showing their own culture and spread it to others for occupying superiority in culture field. With this main stream, Korea also makes effort for holing a dominate position in culture, informing Korea or earning foreign currency. In this effort, the three things such as the familiar cultural features, differences with opponent country, and historical relationship make Korean effort prevail in Japan particularly.

People Give up Chasing Compulsion for Three Reasons.

Hana, a 22-year-old woman, opened her eyes slowly and blinked several times to figure out what time it was. When she peeped out the window and saw dark atmosphere, she felt relief because of the reason she could sleep at least ten minutes. The happiness, however, wasn’t very long. Her alarm clock started warming up to shout and it did: Rrrrrrr! She turned off the alarm clock desperately. Still the bed and blanket was warm and cozy. The cold air told her it was too early to wake up. The pillow didn’t allow her head to leave it. It was an inevitable agony to decide between sweet sleep and welcoming a new day. Hana considered for a minute and decided to overcome from her sleep compulsion. This was because she had to go to school for good grade and she always kept learning her major in mind as the most important aim. The biggest reason, however, she didn’t have enough courage to break her common day. Likewise, there are three reasons that people cannot follow their compulsion: reality, ultimate goal, and lack of courage.

The realistic condition is the first reason for people to give up the compulsion. In the busy society, one person takes a number of works and roles. The society expects various conducts to one person. Be perfect, be kind and be nice! Don’t forget being good father, competent officer, and great citizen! For satisfying all kinds of expectation, people should evade to face the compulsion. The time hurries people to finish works by saying, “Only 24 hours a day!” again and again. Once people escape from time’s pressing and take a breath, the money grabs people’s ankles and locks their act. Even though people cannot know why they try to make and save the money, they pursue it blindly. In this circulation, people ignore what the compulsion they have because seeking the compulsion leads to lose money and time which are reality.

Also, people decide not to follow the compulsion because it usually conflict with the aim which they really want to achieve. By chasing the impulse, people can obtain instant delight, but the momentary joy guide to the way which is opposite from eventual goal. For example, there is a man who wants to be a good politician for Korea. He always does his best in the all field which he accepts. One day, he feels that unbearable sexual desire and decided to slept with a bar maid by paying money. After this and few years later, he forgets it and continues to study and he becomes a politician eventually. He thinks he is success, but one newspaper publishes shocking interview: a woman who have five years old son. She was the object who the politician slept with. Because of this interview, he loses all honor and aim. People concern that one mistake can change whole life and they treat the compulsion is a prime suspect which leads to mistake. So, people try to avoid following compulsion.

The most powerful reason to suppress impulse is insufficient courage to do it. Most people have fear to go outside from their society. Being an outsider by going to other group is one of the most terrible experiences to common people. Also, walking new path which a person has never walked bring great anxiety. The compulsion is like a path through a ghostly forest where people cannot know what happens in that road. He gives up early walking a chilly forest’s road because of an anxiety which a person doesn’t feel yet. Breaking a daily life and dreaming wonderful day off are the just fantasy shown on the television programs, films, or novels to him. The ordinary day –do not absent, do not nod off, or even do not sneeze in front of the boss- brings great stability, so they ignore –pretend to ignore – what the impulse says.

Most of people have various compulsions and dream to achieve their satisfaction by chasing the impulse. They close their eye, however, to see the compulsion because 24 hours and money are always chasing people to do excellent job. The tough suspect of murder tempts people to follow him for a way which is far from people’s life goal. Also, the dark and spooky forest treats people do not approach. In other words, the actualities, obstacles of the goal, and lack courage lead people to abandon their compulsions.

The Middle and High School Ought to Include Culture as a Regular Curricular.

“They are Westerner and their culture is more open-minded than us, so we have to understand.” “Japanese like animation, so they are all otaku.” When you meet foreigners in Korea, what the image of them do you recall in your mind? Don’t you have embarrassing experience because of your thought of them? Many people in Korea already know some universal and unique features which other countries have. These ideas, however, don’t come from accurate information or experience. Most of them are derived from stereotype which the media shows and people believe the aspects of each country as it shows. Especially, teens received what they see and encounter with non-filtering, so those concepts about other countries affect teens greatly without criticism. The misunderstanding about other culture leads to great gap from reality and it causes big problem: stereotype. Therefore, Korean middle school’s regular curriculum ought to include foreign culture subject and the high school’s should include enrichment program about culture subject for establishing own identity, avoiding error, and developing idea.

The first reason the high school curriculum should contain culture study subject is that the accurate understating of own culture is one of the important ways to comprehend “culture” which is the best method of figuring out each country. “Each consciousness pursues the death of the other,” George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, a famous German philosopher, wrote. It means that to define myself and our group, it is necessary to compare others. The culture part has the same way to define, as well. To establish our own cultural characteristics strictly, it is the best way to find out differences from other countries’ cultural features. Korean students can learn Korean culture’s unique traits and attribute by learning other countries’ culture. Also, this can be a good way because Korean students who don’t have pride of Korea due to the cultural toadyism can have self-esteem to their nation, Korea, by obtaining Korean endemic culture.

Furthermore, teaching culture study to high school students keep them from growing stereotypes of other countries’ culture. Most of the media shows various stereotypes of Western, Middle Asian, and even Africa. Even many documentary films, the program which conveys only the truth without dramatic fiction, deploy the stories by using certain stereotype. Teens who are exposed the media thoughtlessly accept what the media say and they begin to build their own idea about others by using the only information which the media produce. This is the problem because the concept which teens form affects them until they become adult. Seung-Woo Go, professor of Journalism and Mass Communication in Korea, said that it is important to educate the teenager from indiscriminately accept foreign culture by the media. Through the school class, teachers produce wrong and right part of media’s expression of other countries and students can learn what is true and false about their concept of others. Therefore, the school -especially the middle school- has responsibility to teach students who are teenager cultural field as a subject to protect them from wrong ideas’ development.

Moreover, the students advance their thoughts by getting exact idea of own culture and other culture. There is famous saying in Korea: If you know your enemy and yourself, you can win every battle.  In Korea, however, two sayings are accepted as general. First idea is that it is enough for students to learn what is right and wrong till they are in the high school. The other one is that it is enough for students to learn various sights of the same situation from the university. Also, Dae-Hyun Song who is the professor in Catholic University of Korea, said that the biggest difference between education of the elementary school to the high school and education of university is this: making a discrimination between right and wrong and making a own idea about the same situation. This idea leads people to think that it is satisfactory to teach high school students only the words and logics about culture such as cultural relativity, imperialism, distinctiveness or universality.

In my perspective, teaching the condition’s right and wrong is enough till middle school students. More specifically, I believe that the high school students already know what is false and true through 9 years’ education and they have the enough ability to build their own view. For example, the current major curriculum of Society in the middle and high school follow the basic and enrichment program. In the middle school, the students learn Society in general. After that, the Society separate 11 kinds of subject such as Korean Geography, Law and Society, and Economy in the high school. Through many kinds of the detailed subjects, the high school students learn thorough part of Society. What’s more is that they can share and integrate different part as one path in the each class. Therefore, I insist that teaching culture subject totally in middle school and then teaching the detailed subject such as Western Culture, Middle Culture, or African Culture in high school are the great way to make the students understand more specifically about culture and grow creative and critical idea about culture. The advanced concept about own culture and other culture heads to make positive change of Korean culture.

The Korean Education system has been experienced lots of changes, but it always draw a line that “culture” don’t have value to learn in school. So, the students who want to study culture cannot have chance to learn it except entering university. Even though the Korean students can learn about culture as an academic course in university, new concept and idea of culture sometimes makes the students confused and gave up to understand owing to shortage of knowledge about culture. So, the culture subject in the middle and high school deserves to teach for the students because it helps them to have strict identity of Korean culture, form right idea of other counties’ culture, and go forward to good change of Korean culture by integrating.
