Why Koreans don’t like cats?
Most countries people like cats. But Koreans don’t like cats. Why do Koreans not like cats even though they really like dogs? Actually we can see a lot of homeless cats on the street. They are always looking for some food because nobody wants to help them. So they usually search for some food in the garbage. That kind of things make people annoyed. Do you think Koreans have cold-blood? The answer is no. Why Koreans don’t like cats?
First of all, Korea has been influced by China for a long time. We tend not to like animals except the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. The cat is not one of those 12. According to tradition, Cats are regarded as mysterious animals so we believe they have some magic power. We believe some superstitions like cats have seven lives so they hardly die. So, if someone kills a cat then it is going to revenge. And cats crying sounds are so similar to babies sound so if we hear that sound at night we get scared.
Second, Cats are independent animals so they can’t be treated like dogs. It is really difficult to have a cat as a pet. Actually I had a experience to have a stray cat. I took care of her for one month I gave her some food to her. She seemed to like me a lot, but suddely she disappeared without any reasons. At that time I was so depressed.
Third, they are so clean animals. They always clean their bodies using their tongues. And they have strong legs so even though they jump from the high place they are ok. They don’t need any help from any human that’s why people don’t have affection to cats. Because they are perfect.
I think we have some prejudice to cats. Most of them are just supersititions and nowadays some people have cats as pets. I think if we train them, they can be our lovely friend and family member.
