Both sides now
Have you ever seen the movie, Love actually?
I think almost guys in this classroom might watch this movie.
Among the scenes, when actress, Emma Thompson gulp down her tears, a song flow into the movie. The song matched very well with Emma Thompson‘s great acting.
A title of the song is “Both sides now” Â
This song was composed by Joni Mitchell, The song which flowed Love actually is Joni Mitchell’s second version. First version came out in 1969, at that time the song’s mood was quite cheerful and warm. After 30 years later, she remake the album and put her own portrait which she paint herself at her album jacket. The second album’s her husky voice contains trace of time and tide. Her voice is perfect to draw the middle -aged women of regret and emptiness. She expressed the passage of time by same song. Â
This song tell us that all of things have both sides, and all the people would experience the truth. However the point is that Although we know the truth, we can not know exactly love and life. She wrote,” I really don’t know life at all, It was life’s illusions I recall.” I remind the words ,” Life is but an empty box”.
Surprisingly, Joni Mitchell wrote this song when she was 21 years old. I was shocked by her maturity. because I am 21 years old too, However things that I think about recently are why my leg is short or when is my winter vacation.
The each lyric is very poetic. I love this lyrics In this lyric, cloud appear first and then love describe. lastly life describe. I think it means progress of life. I guess that life and love is harder and harder following getting old. Like this lyric, There is no telling what may happen, so human are very weak. On the contrast, this is real and indescribable charm of life.Â
This song is my one of the most impressive songs. The “both sides now” has been sung by many singer like Judy Collins, but my favorite is Joni Mitchell’s second version. I think that the song completed when she sang in a husky voice.Â
