I read article about Myanmar’s Pro-democracy protest have been going on for weeks against their government. It reminds me of Korea’s June struggle for Pro-democracy. Now, South Korea is a republic governed by a directly elected president. Although today South Korea is recognized as a democracy, many reform movements took place for several decades to establish democracy.

 One of the massive Pro-democracy movements is June struggle which took place across South Korea in 1987 led activists to step up their struggle for greater human and labor rights. Declarations and statements issued, especially during the intense period of demonstrations July and December following June’s successful fight for constitutional revision to allow for free elections, contained the demands of students, laborers, farmers, and other citizens who had been suffering under Korea’s decades-long military dictatorships.

 The 1987 June struggle was a result of those effort, and people’s democracy grew there in an effort to go beyond. We broke the dictatorship and found citizen’s right to elect president directly. This struggle helped bring about democracy and taught us power resides with people.
