The movie, Paths of Glory, was released in 1957 and directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is based on the book with the same title by Humphrey Cobb. The movie plot outline is that during the First World War, the French army fights against German. General Broulard wants to show how brave the French army is, so he commands to General Mireau to take the hill that is strongly defended by the German military. General Mireau knows that the command is impossible to do, but he wants to get a promotion, so he asks to do that to Colonel Dax. Colonel Dax has to follow the decision made by General, so he attacks the hill and a lot of soldiers lose their lives. After the attack, many soldiers who witness the death get frightened and refuse to follow any command. Then, General Mireau gets angry and makes the cause of the failure to the soldiers. Therefore, more deaths and problems are arising in the military.      Even though the background of the movie is the First World War and the military affairs, I think it shows the problems of the class system. The military is one of the best places to justify the class dictatorship. It is almost impossible to deny the command from the people who have higher ranks in the army, and the movie sharply criticizes the system. The upper class should have the responsibility of taking care about their soldiers and their lives as human being. However, the only thing that General Mireau cares about is keeping the authority and getting promoted. The movie frankly shows it. For example, General Mireau knows that the command to attack the hill will fail or at least, many soldiers will die because of attacking the hill. However, he keeps forcing the order for his promotion. Also, the characteristic of Colonel Dax reveals the problem of the class dictatorship in the military. Dax is very loyal to the army, so he just follows by the order. All of these complicated circumstances mixed together and make a bigger problem.      At the end, it is very ironic that General Mireau is fired by General Broulard’s political interests. Mireau wants to get promoted so badly, but he ends up so easily because of another person’s advantage. Colonel Dax has a chance to promote, but he is in a dilemma because he is getting sick of being around all corruptions in the army. The last scene shows all soldiers are singing German folk song together, and Dax sees it and lets them just sing. This represents all humans are just same whatever their rank is or whoever they come from.
