My trip
In the summer before last, I took a one-day field trip to a place called Kkottongne, which means Flower Village in English, in Chungcheongbuk-do. There were about 3,000 mentally and physically handicapped people in the village, who were rejected by their family. From newborn babies to people over a hundred years old, most of them had handicaps of the mind or baby. I was a little scared at first. On the first day, I went to the nearby school that was founded for mentally and physically handicapped children. I started my volunteer work there. I can hardly describe the shock of seeing classrooms filled with young handicapped children. I was shocked to see their strange appearance. However, while embracing the children crawling to me, changing their diapers, and pushing their wheelchair, I realized that are just as human as I am. Starting to feed them spoon by spoon, I felt tears well up in my eyes. Next morning in the bus coming back, I kept whispering to myself. “I am happy from the bottom of my heart.” They provided me with the chance to reflect upon myself and the true meaning of life. As soon as I got home, I embraced my parent. Now I believe that someone who helps others and feels satisfied with his or her own life is living the happiest life.
