[Sexuality in the Media]SummaryÂ
Sexual mores have been both tabooed and concealed world-wide, but this is especially true in
Korea. Such as the mores, ’different genders do not sit at the same place after age seven,’ the sexual separation was thoroughly treated for long time at
Korea because of Confucianism. However, if turn on TV, we can notice how much the sexual mores has been changed and changing in mass media. In dramas or movies, the “Cross sexual,’ referring to man seemed like woman or vice-versa, appears, which makes a boundary between man and woman become vague. Furthermore, homosexuality absolutely tabooed is also being treated openly. If we call ‘tomboy’ as a mannish women, there are womanish men, also. They are defined as ‘Cross sexual.’ It means the man who enjoys makeup and wears clothes and accessories of woman. This syndrome made by ‘tomboy’ and ‘Cross sexual’ means the collapse of traditional fashion of man and woman.Â
Many Korean were conservative. But recently, many producers make movies, songs, musicals, and TV dramas about homosexuality. These days, Korean culture expresses love and sex openly and frankly.Â
Mass media affects the way we think about sexuality. I strongly maintain that broadcasting stations must prescribe some rules for broadcasting.Â
