Children Affected by Mass Media

I watched the film ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ yesterday, which is a thriller and horror film. In this film, there are many brutal scenes: eating human flesh, killing by excoriating men’s skin and torso murder. I think this kind of films cause people to imitate the crimes.

For example, a few years ago, one middle-school student put his classmate to the edge of the knife. After the accident, he said he had been much affected by the Korean film “Friend.” In the film like ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, there are many cruel acts: the most brutal scene is killing ‘Dong Su’, one of four best friends, in the end of the movie. Also, according to a research, after ‘The Godfather’ showed in the 70s, many felonies such as murder, arson and rape drastically increased in America. It means a movie affects a lot of audience whether it is good or bad.

What I most worry about is that common children who are pure and innocent imitate the crimes in the films without any doubt. It is said that the most important thing in one’s life is childhood’s experience because the more people are young, the easier they are affected by environment around them. Of course, I know every movie is rated by many association related to the movie industry. So, it is impossible for children to enter the theater in order to watch the movie which is rated restricted. Nevertheless, if they want to watch the sensational movie, they can do it through the internet, secretly avoiding their parents.

However, because of these things, we also cannot remove every brutal scene in the movie. Brutal scenes which are brilliantly described offer the audience chance to think about violence of people: how vicious people are sometimes. For example, Buffalo Bill, brutal murderer in the movie ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ kills many women continually to satisfy his greed. Through his unusual behavior, reasonable people can think about the importance of childhood and human abominable cruelty, not imitating them.

In my opinion, in order to get out of the dilemma, we have to consider about children’s accessibility to the restricted. That is, adults must prevent children from access to restricted media such as porno. Also, at once, we have to establish efficient education system which helps children learn how to accept mass media.

Do I have to feel sympathy?

Today I watched a TV show named “Starking” that many people with surprising abilities appear. Since next Monday is ‘Children’s Day’, the program specially focused on children with amazing abilities. Actually, many children were surprised me but the most remarkable child was a sightless girl. She was able to play piano even thought she was born with trouble.

However, I wasn’t happy with the program when she finished performance. The program focused overly on the fact that she is a handicapped person. When she appeared on the stage, they turn on a sentimental music and that seemed to me they were trying to make people to feel sympathy for her.

Truly, I feel pity for handicapped people because they can’t enjoy their life as we do. Overcoming difficulties that seems impossible leads people to challenge anything that was harsh to them. In this sense, the handicapped people’s lives can be better than us since they usually overcome their troubles like the one who I saw on the TV.

We should help them, but it doesn’t mean that we should feel sorry for what happened to them.

Two days and one night plagiarism Muhandojeon!!

Nowdays, there are very popular real variety show programs which are “1 bak 2 il”, which means two days and one night, and “Muhandojeon”.

But “1 bak 2 il” was doubted because Two days and one night plagiarisms Muhandojeon.

I think “1bak 2il” doesn’t plagiarism Muhandojeon.

Both of “1bak 2il” and “Muhandojeon” have similarities because of the property which that kinds of program have.

So it is possible to be overlapped somethings.

I like both of programs as a viewer. I don’t think so.

But when I look at the number of articles, datas and photographs, I agree with that could be true.

A number of people comment about that, it shows two programs are loved by viewers.

It means that the two programs are loved by viewers.

Do you understand ‘newly coined words’?

I am three years older than my younger brother. I did not used to feel that we have generation gap because we have only 3 years difference! However he is still wearing high school uniform but I am not. Could that be a real big reason? Even it’s Korean sometimes I don’t get what he’s saying. I need his explanation. Gosh, all of sudden language scares me. Who guerantees that English is not as fast as Korean’s changing?

For example, ‘Ji-Mot-Mi’ which we say when somebody has been taken insulting pictures and it was posted on-line. If I translate it directly it can say ‘Sorry, I couldn’t protect you’. Do you think somebody who’s studying Korean can understand when he/she is supposed to use this expression?? We really mean that ‘we sorry because we let you be like this and now it’s on-line so it’s kind of too late to fix it. Accept reality’. It takes time little long to make myself clear.

Language goes and changes so fast. So does English. We have to keep up the hard work to catch up with ‘changing one’. Do you happen to know about all of these? I was confused!! (Those are Korean though)

Should we believe Internet News?

I read some book about Media, Media 2.0, written by ex-reporter.  As we welcome the generation of Media 3.0, he indicates some problem about news.  Actually, it was not main point of his book, but I thought seriouly about the part he wrote as problem.  Masters of newspaper company require reporters to be generalist.  They go to the places probably being new items bringing 2 or 3 camera, lap-top, paper and pen,  recorder and car.  They have to be specialist in those parts not only in writing and reporting but also in camera, driving, and computer.  Plus company also require them to write news faster and they post their writings on the Internet.  There is no time to think more, and there is no rest to retouch.  They should only consider speed.  Therefore, the quality of news is getting down.  They even incollect in alphabets.  In this situation, I don’t quite believe our Internet news.  Plus, I want to add one more.  Do you know why our news company have not authorities even though they sell newpapers a lot? Compared to Washington post and Newyork Times,  the number of sell of our news is almost same as them or more.  I think that’s because of the quality.
