Do I have to feel sympathy?

Today I watched a TV show named “Starking” that many people with surprising abilities appear. Since next Monday is ‘Children’s Day’, the program specially focused on children with amazing abilities. Actually, many children were surprised me but the most remarkable child was a sightless girl. She was able to play piano even thought she was born with trouble.

However, I wasn’t happy with the program when she finished performance. The program focused overly on the fact that she is a handicapped person. When she appeared on the stage, they turn on a sentimental music and that seemed to me they were trying to make people to feel sympathy for her.

Truly, I feel pity for handicapped people because they can’t enjoy their life as we do. Overcoming difficulties that seems impossible leads people to challenge anything that was harsh to them. In this sense, the handicapped people’s lives can be better than us since they usually overcome their troubles like the one who I saw on the TV.

We should help them, but it doesn’t mean that we should feel sorry for what happened to them.

  1. You’re right. They are not there to get attention which comes from people’s sympathy. The reason why they are there ( I mean in public, on-line or media etc) is to share their story and express themselves because they already overcame difficulties so they are ready to show “real them” that they purely got by confidence and efforts. It’s not showing off things and it’s not expecting getting some money either. What we do is listening their stories, giving really big hands and be ready to share and open our mind.

  2. I agree with you.
disabled people are same as us!!
they just have more unique thing than us.

but that kind of inducing sympathy on the Tv I think that is also distingciton.
cause tv said like to “They are different(bad meaning) from us but they tried in order to same as us.”

  3. The programs for fun are tend to be forget the main point. Not only for the interesting plot, but also harmony and relationship with the participants should be respected.
Though I don’t like that sorts of programs, including so called talk-show, I feel same with you.!
