What is The Chu-Suk?
Chu-Suk is one of the biggest traditional festival days in Korea, and the full harvest moon festival occurs on August 15th of the lunar calendar. The festival is celebrated as a mark of respect to elders. Memorial Services are held during which family members visit the graves of their ancestors and their living relatives in their hometowns.
First of all, during Chu-Suk, family members come from all of the cities to visit their parents’ home, and they have many kinds of food which they make for the festival. Therefore, they do Jesa for their ancestors. They together prepare a lot of special food to do the Jesa; such as, new rice, taro soup, yellow corvina, meat, grilled food, and several kind of fruit. Especially, family members gathering at which “Songphyun” is served. These are special rice cakes made of rice, beans, sesame, and seeds. And then, all family members together enjoy to eat, and enjoy to talk about their daily lives each other.
There are many kind of traditional games in Korea. They enjoy to play Yut, and they play a game called turtle tag. Moreover, they also enjoy Kang Kang Sue Wollae, which is a traditional ceremony for women. During this ceremony they make a circle, and sing songs and dance to mark festival. Then, they are gathered so they could have a exciting time
Chu-Suk makes to tie their family to be one, and it’s the time to be thankful to their ancestors. During Chu-Suk, they can have plenty inner resources, and they are happy that they enjoy with their all family, and feel thank to each other.
