These days I’m watching American soap opera “Weeds.”

It content is widow sell pots(marihuana)for make money to living.
This drama’s background is white rich suburban but lots of people smoke pot even if they are lawer and accountant during play golf or watch American football.
So I have a question. In the North America smoke pot is really common culture?
It’s illegal thing then how people smoke pot while playing golf? It just only soap opera thing or not?

I am not sure if it’s common in U.S. but I think that it’s definitely easier to get marihuana in America than in Korea or some other countries. It seems like smoking cigarette in Korea.
Wow, another “Weeds” fan. I think it’s the funniest show on TV these days, and a wonderful mixture of The Sopranos with Desperate Housewives.
Two things:
1. Actually, they’re not exactly “rich” suburban people. They’re more like upper-middle class. There are lots of comments in the series about how the suburb houses are really badly built and cheap, and nobody who is “rich” could support her lifestyle by selling marijuana, I think.
2. Social acceptance of marijuana is relatively high in many parts of the world, including the USA and Canada but also India, Western Europe, and other places. Marijuana possession, in small amounts, was not long ago decriminalized in Canada… it’s still “illegal,” but as far as I heard it’s no more serious than parking illegally or jaywalking.
One reason marijuana remains illegal in many countries is because, regardless of public attitudes, there is generally a political cost to discussing legalizing marijuana — it’s one of those subjects the political right-wing is never willing to negotiate about — and most left-wing politicians are more interested in using their political power, when they have some, to address other issues.
You might find the (horrible, funny, and factually very inaccurate) propaganda film Reefer Madness, which is famous for how exaggerated the effects of marijuana are. (Many of these myths are commonly believed among political conservatives today; they also seem commonly believed in Korea.)
So, yes, while marijuana is generally illegal in the US and Canada, like it is in Korea (and many other countries), it is not socially perceived as a hard drug in North America or much of Western Europe. Most people that think trying it, or using it for a while, is a normal or common part of one’s youthful rebellion — hence American was willing to make Bill Clinton the president even when he denied smoking marijuana, in a way that made it obvious he really had smoked it, at least as a young man — and many people argue scientifically and statistically that marijuana is much less dangerous than alcohol!

Yes, it’s a great black comedy. As well as great social commentary on race, subculture, and crime in America. I can’t wait to see what happens in Season 4!
These days, I watch this TV show after handling this TV show in a class of mine. I think this show offered us the good chance to think about why marijuana is prohibited in our society.
